If the ferry stopped running tomorrow, what would our community do? Here in the islands, ferries are our lifeline—for food, medicine, fuel, and access to hospitals. An earthquake, a storm, or even a labor disruption could strand us with little warning. That’s not a hypothetical; it’s a hazard we live with every day. Disasters don’t wait for government resources to arrive, and no single agency can prepare for every possibility. That’s why FEMA encourages what’s called the Whole Community Approach to emergency preparedness. It means all of us—residents, businesses, nonprofits, local government—share responsibility for readiness and resilience. The founder of San Juan Islands Prepare, Elizabeth Gadbois, presentation will be “Knowing the Hazards & Building Preparedness Through the Whole Community Approach.”
