Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor

OUR MISSION

Provide women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.

SI/Friday Harbor (Northwestern Region) is the local club of a world-wide service organization.  In addition to our Scholarships and Awards programs for local women and girls, our club supports the community through our main other programs including: Cancer Treatment Transportation Program, Food Security Support and a Women's Emergency Fund.

The Beginning

In 1995 founding member Pat Hansen brought together a group of San Juan Island women with a vision for a service organization focused on the needs of women. They formed a Soroptimist club in Friday Harbor, chartered May 11, 1996 with 44 members. We had a busy first year and haven’t stopped! Many charter members are still active today!  Meet our current Board Members who lead our mission and club today.

Meetings

We encourage members to join Club meetings in-person at the Marie Boe SJ Fairgrounds and/or other venues to be determined at noon on Wednesdays.  A Zoom link will be added for members who want that option as we proceed through the year.  Guests are welcome-to get an invitation to the next meeting by sending an E-mail to: membership@sifri.org

Community Involvement

Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor sponsors and supports a variety of community organizations, programs and events:
 

  • Our Annual A-May-Zing Gala is the Soroptimist Friday Harbor's major fundraising event.  Please watch for details in mid-April.

  • The Cancer Treatment Transportation Fund to aid cancer patients and their caregivers in transportation to the mainland for treatment.

  • The Live Your Dream Award is for a woman with financial need, who is the primary wage earner in the household and enrolled in an undergraduate or vocational degree program of study.

  • The Continuing Education Award is for a woman with financial need (but not necessarily the primary wage earner), who is enrolled in an undergraduate or vocational degree program of study.

  • The Fellowship Award is for a woman attending graduate school.

  • Annual Making a Difference for Women – Ruby Award to exceptional women in the community.

  • Women's Emergency Fund available to those individuals in the community who need a quick helping hand where other funds are not accessible.
