Soroptimist International is a worldwide volunteer service organization for women in management and professions working to advance human rights and the status of women and girls. This organization of over 120,000 clubs provides a global voice for women in effecting change at a local, national and international level through awareness, advocacy and action. The name, Soroptimist, means “best for women,” and that’s what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women at their best, working to help other women to be their best. The mission statement is ‘Improving the lives of women and girls, in the local communities and throughout the world.’
Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor members share their time, talents and financial resources to enrich the San Juan Island community through service projects like the Soroptimist Cancer Treatment Support Mission Project which helps fund transportation to the mainland for islanders receiving cancer treatment. We acknowledge island women and girls who work to make a difference with the Violet Richardson Award and the Making A Difference Ruby Award. Our Live Your Dream campaign provides the Women’s Opportunity Award to a woman who is improving the life of herself and her family. In addition to our commitment to the San Juan Island community, we contribute to national and international projects as well.
Together, we will:
• Improve the lives of women and girls
• Help women achieve economic and political equality
• Serve as a global voice for women
• Provide outstanding leadership development opportunities for women
• Enhance world peace and understanding
